5K to support those dealing with breast cancer
The first annual Shirley’s Angels “Check Your Headlights” 5K will be held in Huntersville on Saturday, May 11.
This is the first event such as this for Shirley’s Angels, but not their first fundraising event. For the past 6 years this organization has raised tens of thousands of dollars to support women diagnosed with breast cancer. The founder, Shannon Laatsch, started the charity after watching her mom, Shirley, battle the disease and fight a valiant fight. “I think about the pain, treatments, medical procedures, and doctor visits that mom not only endured, but emerged from with a smile on her face, I realize that our everyday struggles pale in comparison. My mom believed that being diagnosed with breast cancer was a blessing and she taught me a lot about toughness, choosing joy in the midst of pain, and that strength and faith will carry you through the darkest of times “, Shannon says, admiringly remembering her mom. “We are looking for a great turnout at the race to share just how important it is to raise awareness about breast cancer – getting checked early can save your life“, says Laatsch.
Shirley’s Angels is a local non-profit focused on promoting breast cancer research and outreach, including providing education and breast cancer support to those who desperately need it. They are building a support system within our community to give comfort and care to those on their breast cancer journey – from diagnosis to the sisterhood of survivors.
The event is being held on Mother’s Day weekend to glorify not only Shannon’s mother, but all mothers and women. Runners of all levels of experience are being encouraged to participate. All proceeds from the race will aid those inflicted with breast cancer.
So come run, walk or support the cause with a donation. For more information – www.shirleysangels.org.
