Eating Healthy During the Winter Months
For many people, it is easy to eat a healthy diet and stay fit during the summer. After all, that is the season with the freshest fruits and vegetables, and people are more likely to be active when it is nice and sunny outside. During the winter months, on the other hand, it can be easy to get lazy and to start to eat poorly. This is especially true during the holiday season, as desserts that are full of sugar are everywhere, and sharing food is an important part of celebrations. Luckily, it’s also easy to eat healthfully during the winter months if you just know how.
First, stick with the basics. You don’t need to follow any kind of crazy or elaborate fad diet to help you get the nutrients that you need. Follow the old standards, with a diet that is high in whole foods and low in processed foods, with lots of vegetables and healthy sources of fats and protein. Make sure that your snacks meet the same requirements as the rest of your diet. Consider picking up healthy snacks like bulk nuts from a provider like the Superior Nut Store to keep around the house. This will give you the energy you need without being simply empty calories. In fact, the fat, fiber, and protein in nuts can keep you feeling full for hours as well as giving you the energy to power through your day.
Then, think about all of the amazing produce that is, in fact, in season during the winter. Did you know that citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruit are all in season during the winter? You can add vegetables that are in season since the late fall, such as sweet potatoes, acorn squash, and pumpkins as well.
Finally, make it a point to cook as often as possible in the winter. There’s nothing nicer than a warm house with great smells coming from the oven. Enjoy the food you eat and let it nourish you.
