I have lived in Charlotte almost 10 years now…oh my gosh has it been that long?!…and every year we get a Christmas Tree at a Christmas Tree Lot somewhere in Charlotte. I don’t think we have gone to the same Christmas Tree Lot twice…that is until this year.
Let me back up a moment. Every year we pass a Christmas Tree Lot on Mallard Creek Rd…just pass it up. Four years ago we stopped at that Christmas Tree Lot and it was then I was introduced to HomeTown Heroes and the rest is history.
In 2010, when we pulled up, we were immediately greeted by a young man who was more than happy to help us find a tree. But he also started telling me about HomeTown Heroes, the ones who were in charge of the Christmas Tree Lot, and that all the proceeds from this Christmas Tree Lot went to help families of children with cancer. Another gentleman, Dennis came over and he was explaining HomeTown Heroes and Angels Among Us to me.
“Hometown Heroes is dedicated to those kids that need some big friends. Our focus is to make these children and their families OUR families. “Big Kids Helping Little Kids” isn’t just a slogan, it’s a promise to make a difference in the lives of some kids that can use our help.”
Dennis told me all about several children who were part of the Hometown Heroes Family and how some of them lost their battles with cancer. It is at this point that I had tears in my eyes. Looking down at Reece and Betsy, I could not imagine them suffering through cancer, and then to lose them after the fight? Sometimes we want to put our heads in the sand because we don’t want to see what is around us. Why does the little girl have a hat on and we can only see tufts of hair underneath? Do we ignore what we “think” it is and go about our day? Or do we say a prayer for that little girl and her family right then and show her our biggest smile so she KNOWS we are also fighting for her silently with prayer?
Hometown Heroes has several other fundraising events throughout the year which leads up to Walmart night for their families. Walmart closes early for these families on Christmas Eve and these families get to go in Walmart with money raised by Hometown Heroes and pick out their Christmas presents, dinner, whatever they want. For some of these families, this is the only way they will have Christmas. Imagine if your child was sick with cancer and you needed to travel to other states to get the proper treatment – Would you be able to hold down a full time job? These families need Hometown Heroes and Hometown Heroes needs us…people to help spread the word, to help people support the cause in any way possible.
After our tree was loaded in the truck, we went to get in and when we opened up the doors, smoke started billowing out of the truck! I looked under the ignition and a wire was on fire…It smelled like we had just started a huge plastic fire. I got the kids away from the truck and Mel proceeded to try and find the problem.
Hmmmm…I think this might of been one of the first reasons Stacy Denton nicknamed me “Grace”…hhahha! But Mel wasn’t the only one working on the truck, three of the HomeTown Heroes Christmas Tree Lot volunteers came over and helped Mel get the truck working.
The truck finally started and we were on our way home. And all I could think of were these nice men and boy at this tree farm, supporting a great organization, Hometown Heroes. How there was a reason, after seeing this tree lot for the last 5 years at least, that we happened to pick our tree here. There was a reason.
Since then, I have done everything I could possible do to get HomeTown Heroes name out there. They are a wonderful organization and deserve to be acknowledged.
So, when you go to get your Christmas Tree this year, think about stopping by the HomeTown Heroes Christmas Tree Lot, you will find a great tree, at a great price, while supporting a great cause.
Can you guess where I will be getting my Christmas Tree this year?
