Reece is kind of a reluctant reader. The book has to be pretty darn interesting in order to keep Reece’s attention so I am always looking for books that will encourage him to read more. So when I had the opportunity to review Ripley’s Believe It or Not – Strikingly True I jumped at the chance because I knew Reece would read it cover to cover!
Talk about an interesting, fascinating, and sometimes down right outrageous book – Reece LOVES IT! But that does not surprise me. For the last five years in a row we have purchased the Ripley’s Believe it or Not Books that are put out on a yearly basis. From monster bugs to dogs made out of gum, if something odd or fascinating has happened you can bet Ripley’s will put it in the book! This book will literally keep Reece entertained for hours on end…but that is not the end of it. He will read his favorite “odd” stories over and over again and them read then OUT LOUD to anyone who will listen to him.
I like Ripley’s Believe it Or Not – Strikingly True book because yes, some of the stuff is truly bizarre, but it is not offensive in and it a great book for kids and adults alike.
Talk about a conversation starter:
Me: “Hey Eve (my neighbor), did you hear about the Iron Man?”
Eve: (Looks at me funny): What?
Me: You know, the man the survived having an iron rod blasted through his face and out the top of his skull?
Eve: (Still looking at me funny): Uh, no…I haven’t heard him. (Looks at Melanie my other neighbor and mouths “Is Katie OK?” – Melanie shrugs.)
Me: He survived and remained physically active, although his brain injury significantly changed his character. His injury contributed to an understanding of how the brain works. Isn’t that fascinating?
Eve: Yes, that is fascinating. (Looks at Melanie and whispers, “I don’t believe it. Where does Katie get these things?”)
Ripley’s Believe It or Not – Strikingly True would be a great gift for anyone that likes odd or bizarre facts. I know I love this book and Reece loves it more. Ripley’s Believe it or Not books will always be in my house – especially since they clearly encourage Reece to read more. I love the fact that he will pick up that book and just start reading it by himself without anyone making him read it.
