Protecting Your Skin this Summer

In the summer, when the sun heats up and you’re spending more time outside, you are at extra risk for sun damage and its aging effects. Almost all visible signs of aging are caused by external elements, with sun damage being the worst skin offender. Lines, wrinkles, sagging, and even cellulite are all caused or aggravated by the sun’s rays. Fortunately, there are a number of precautions you can take to minimize that damage and keep your summer skin looking fresh and youthful.

The most important key to protecting your skin this summer is using enough sunscreen. Choose a sunscreen with a high SPF, or skin protection factor, which tells you the percentage of UV rays which penetrate the sunscreen and reach your skin. Make sure that your sunscreen offers full spectrum protection, blocking both UVA rays, which cause the signs of aging, and UVB rays, which cause sunburn. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using at least one ounce of sunscreen to protect your face and body. Be sure to reapply at least every two hours.

Of course, not every part of your body can be protected by sunscreen. Clothing, especially darker fabrics or those that have been coated in a sun resistant chemical, will protect your scalp and other body parts that you may have a hard time reaching. Wear a lip balm that’s at least SPF 15 to keep from burning this delicate area. Most importantly, prevent crows feet and sagging skin in the eye area by wearing sunglasses that provide full spectrum sun protection as well.

Besides protecting yourself from the sun’s dangerous rays, heal yourself and shield your skin from the inside out. Eat a healthy diet, including antioxidants like Vitamins A, C, and E, to help your skin stay resilient and youthful. Most importantly, stay hydrated. Drink at least 32 ounces of water or water-based beverages, especially when spending time outside or exercising.
