This morning a 17 year old child was killed at his bus stop.
The bus was stopped.
The red lights were flashing on the bus.
The “STOP” arm was out.
The boy was crossing the street, doing what he should be doing, to get to the bus.
A car ignored the flashing lights, the STOP arm and hit and killed this boy.
My heart breaks for this child’s family. For the person who sped passed the flashing lights…his life is ruined…he is being charged with death by motor vehicle and passing a stopped school bus. The guilt will probably eat him alive.
As I was driving my daughter to school yesterday, I was driving through the school zone, which has a 25 MPH speed limit. I was driving 25 MPH. I was being tailgated, cars were flying by me. It was crazy. And at the time I thought, “If I was a cop, I would just sit on this road and write tickets all day long and I would probably get my quota for the month in two days.”
Why do we have to wait for a child to get killed to do something?
Just be a defensive driver…always.
Put your phone down.
Pay attention to your surroundings.
Do not speed, especially near neighborhoods, and during school hours.
The same goes to people running, riding bikes, and crossing streets. Let’s face it. Cars are deadly weapons, that was proven today.
Pedestrians and bikes in the road generally do have the right of way. But please, I beg of you, don’t expect drivers to always give you the right of way. There are stupid drivers out there…and unfortunately, their stupid mistakes can lead to death….just like it did today.
My prayers go out to the family of this child whose life was cut short…who was following the rules…who was just trying to get to school…because of a stupid driver.
We all need to be more vigilant when driving a lethal weapon. Always.
