I am one of those 25% of Moms that wait until the last minute to go Back To School Shopping. (According to the August 2011 online survey Mom Central Consulting and T.J.Maxx/Marshalls conducted, while most moms get the bulk of their back to school shopping done in the weeks ahead of school, 25% wait until the last minute – ME!) As a matter of fact, I really do not do ALL of my shopping on one day…I spread it out over a matter of weeks so that my kids can transition into school with “summery” clothes, then into Fall, and then Winter.
And with two tweens, I always have to take into account that they are looking for trendy styles, the latest look, etc. I, on the other hand am looking to get the highest quality and biggest bang for my buck! Over the weekend, Betsy and I headed over to Marshalls with a $50 Gift card. What were we going to be able to get for our money and would we both be happy?
What Are the Trends this year for teens (or tweens!) according to Marshalls and T.J. Maxx:
Tops, dresses and jackets are flaunting new, voluminous sleeve details with kimono and dolman shapes. A capelet and pair of cropped denim pants are a great combo for returning to the classroom.
Check this shirt out! Betsy and I both fell in love with it when we saw it! It was the BEST DEAL at Marshalls that we found that day!
It is a light weight shirt, with beautiful sleeves. The sleeves have a slit in the arm so this shirt is easily wearable while the weather is still warm, but looks very trendy and “hip”!
A must-‐have for the new school year is a French terry zip-‐up hoodie, solid or striped. Fashionistas will try it layered over a romper.
Skinny leg denim should not be forgotten, but teens should make room in their wardrobes for a new pair of flared leg jeans. They look best paired with a vintage tee and lightweight jacket.
While we didn’t purchase any “blue” jeans, Betsy did pick out these awesome skinny leg, black corduroy jeans. They fit her perfectly! These were the most expensive item we purchased at…(drum roll please) 16.99! These will easily transition from Fall into Winter!
We paired it up with a long, red, sweater that because of the length, she can wear it over jeans or tights and wear it as a dress!
For teens, boots and booties with details like lacing, wedges and shearling or faux fur are the must-‐have footwear for the 2011 school year.
Betsy had her eye on some super cute boots, but we wanted to make sure we kept as close to our 50.00 budget as possible, but also make sure she was able to wear whatever shoes we purchased with the outfits we were buying. Finally, we settled on some black, cable knit style, flats for her. I am in love with these!
Accessorizing is fun with skinny belts, printed scarves, fashion totes for carrying books and lots of leggings and tights to choose from.
Before school started, we already purchased her Roxy backpack from Marshalls, so we stuck with buying a package of black, cableknit, socks. These are not only really functional, since they go over the knee, Betsy can wear them with boots, pants, skirts, or dresses. (In picture with the shoes.)
So how did we pan out? Well, we only went slightly over our budget of $50.
We spent 52.51 and let me remind you what we got:
A Pair of Corduroy Jeans
2 Pairs of Socks
In my opinion – WE SCORED!
See, Back to School Shopping does not have to break the bank – even when buying trendy, cute clothes. As a matter of fact, on the side, we also purchased a light weight Hurley Hoodie for Reece!
