I was invited to a prescreening of Cars 2 so my kids and I headed out last night to watch the movie. After having read others opinions of the movie, quite honestly I was not sure what to expect.
But – I liked it and so did my kids. My initial, gut reaction to this movie was that it was “James Bond meets Cars” – No kidding. There was a “get the bad guys” plot, lots of racing, action which included blowing things up and guns, and life lessons mixed in.
This is where the lines of movie picture ratings and things that might raise flags for parents might come in.
It is rated “G”
It is rated “G” indicating this movie is approved for all audiences. Although there was no cussing, there was talk of “killing” Cars (Lightening McQueen being one of them) and there was what could be considered a “bar scene”. I think they were just drinking motor oil, but in one instance, that “motor oil” was in a martini glass.
This scene did not bother me. And not because I am “OK” with my kids watching bar scenes…but because everything was labeled “Motor Oil” and if I didn’t know what a “bar scene” actually looked like because I have been in bars, I probably would have thought they were just regular drinks. I don’t know how movies are really rated, but honestly, regardless of the ages of my children, I would allow them to watch this movie.
Mater Had the Biggest Role
For all the Lightening McQueen fans, Mater had more screen time than McQueen. I quite liked it in fact, because there were two other “Cars” that played major roles and because it showed that someone (Mater in this case) who may not be the flashiest, the smartest, the fastest, still play important roles in life.
Lots of Action
There was lots of action in this movie. Several cars were put out of commission and there was talk about “killing” McQueen. Things were exploding, guns were being fired, and a couple cars actually “died”.
I, personally liked this movie. My son who is 12 thought it was “cool” and my daughter who is 9 also enjoyed it. Use your best judgement based on my review and others reviews. But I would recommend this movie based on my kids reactions and my reaction.
About Cars 2:
“Star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in “Cars 2” when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage.
